Plastic additives: challenges in ecotox hazard assessment

نویسندگان

چکیده

The risk of plastic debris, and specifically micro(nano)plastic particles, to ecosystems remains be fully characterized. One particular issue that warrants further characterization is the hazards associated with chemical additives within as they are not chemically bound polymers can persistent biologically active. Most plastics contain therefore potential vectors for introduction these chemicals into environment leach from plastic, a process accelerated through degradation weathering processes. There knowledge gaps on ecotoxicological effects how released parent materials progressively fragment meso micro nano scale. This review summarizes current state ecotoxicity identifies research needs characterize hazard present exposed biota. ecological international concern so key differences in governance between European Union New Zealand appropriately their highlighted.

Colorant Materials, Additives in Plastic Technology

Pigments and dyes are coloring substances, i.e., substances imparting a specific color to the substrate being colored (Carolin et al. 2015). Pigments and dyes are distinctly different types of colorants. A pigment is a finely divided solid which is essentially insoluble in its polymeric application medium. Pigments are incorporated by a dispersion process into the polymer, while it is in a liqu...

Leaching of plastic additives to marine organisms.

It is often assumed that ingestion of microplastics by aquatic species leads to increased exposure to plastic additives. However, experimental data or model based evidence is lacking. Here we assess the potential of leaching of nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) in the intestinal tracts of Arenicola marina (lugworm) and Gadus morhua (North Sea cod). We use a biodynamic model that allows cal...

Plastic Additives in Bodily Fluids Have Hormonal and Behavioral Effects

It is known from the ubiquitous presence of plastic additives in the environment (air, water and land) worldwide, that the human body anywhere (including the Arctic) is bombarded by these compounds daily. It is not surprising then there is ubiquitous presence of plastic additives in human bodily fluids around the world, facilitated by the numerous pathways of these organic compounds into our bo...

HAZARD I: Software for Fire Hazard Assessment

NIST Handbook 146, HAZARD I—Fire Hazard Assessment Method [1], represents the culmination of a long-term program aimed at placing the prediction of fire outcomes on an objective and scientific basis. In the 1970s, NIST supported Harvard University to develop numerical models that could predict the temperature in a room containing a fire. These early models were difficult to use and interpret; r...
